From Ashes to Adventure: How Sundog Sailing Turned Tragedy into Charleston’s Premier Luxury Sailing Experience

At Sundog Sailing, our story is about more than sailing Charleston Harbor. It’s about resilience, determination, and discovering that even after everything seems lost, the wind can still carry you somewhere extraordinary.
The Day Everything Changed
In 2023, our beloved charter vessel, Shenanigan, was destroyed in a devastating fire while at Marine Propulsion on Wadmalaw Island. Two other boats were also lost in the blaze, leaving owners and the Charleston boating community in shock. The fire was covered by Live 5 News and served as a heartbreaking reminder of how quickly years of hard work can disappear.
For a small, locally owned charter business, losing a boat isn’t just losing a vessel.
It’s losing your livelihood. It’s cancelling charters. It’s disappointing returning guests. It’s wondering what comes next.
For a time, the future of Sundog Sailing was uncertain.
Choosing to Rebuild

Rather than walking away from the business we loved, we committed ourselves to creating something even better. Along the way, our Instagram community (@sundog_sailing), loyal guests, friends, family, fellow captains, and the Charleston boating community supported us every step of the way.
Those updates became more than progress reports. They became a record of resilience, hope, and determination.
Their encouragement reminded us why we started Sundog Sailing in the first place: to share the beauty of Charleston Harbor from the deck of a sailboat.
A New Chapter: Windchaser
In 2025, that vision became reality.
We welcomed Windchaser, our stunning 50-foot luxury sailing yacht.
Looking back, it’s difficult to imagine Sundog Sailing without her.
Windchaser has allowed us to offer the elevated sailing experiences we always dreamed of creating—private sunset cruises, romantic evening sails, family celebrations, corporate outings, moonlight charters, and unforgettable days exploring Charleston Harbor aboard one of the area’s largest private sailing yachts.
What once felt like the worst day in our company’s history became the catalyst for building the charter experience we had always envisioned.
The Story Behind Every Sail
When guests step aboard Windchaser today, they see polished teak, spacious decks, comfortable seating, and breathtaking views of Charleston Harbor.
What they don’t always see is the journey that made it possible.
Every dock line secured. Every sail raised. Every smiling guest. Every unforgettable sunset.
Each one represents perseverance.
Every charter is a reminder that setbacks don’t have to define your future. Sometimes they become the beginning of something even greater.

There is no place quite like Charleston from the water.
Whether we’re sailing past The Battery, Rainbow Row, Fort Sumter, Castle Pinckney, or beneath the Arthur Ravenel Jr. Bridge, each charter offers a new perspective on the Lowcountry. Add playful dolphins and spectacular sunsets, and every sail becomes an experience worth remembering.
Sharing these moments with our guests is even more meaningful because we know just how close we came to losing the opportunity to do what we love.
