Have you ever looked up at the sky and seen a rainbow of light glowing beside the Sun? Now imagine seeing that incredible display curve all the way around the sky in a complete 360Β° circle! πβ¨
A sundog, also known as a parhelion, is a beautiful atmospheric optical phenomenon created when sunlight passes through tiny, hexagonal ice crystals suspended in high, thin clouds called cirrus clouds. These crystals bend and refract the sunlight, creating brilliant patches of rainbow-like color on either side of the Sun.
But a 360Β° sundog display is something truly extraordinary!
Ordinary sundogs appear as bright spots about 22 degrees to either side of the Sun. Under the right atmospheric conditions, sunlight interacting with ice crystals of different orientations can produce a much more elaborate display of halos and arcs that extend around the entire sky. A complete 360Β° ring is not a typical sundog, and a fully developed display is an uncommon sight from anywhere.
π΄ How rare is it at Charleston’s latitude?
Charleston, South Carolina, sits at approximately 32.8Β° north latitude, where warm, humid coastal weather is far more familiar than dramatic ice-crystal displays. Sundogs can still occur here when high-altitude ice clouds are present, but a spectacular, fully developed 360Β° halo display requires a special combination of atmospheric conditions. It is an unusual sight for the Lowcountry, although its exact frequency has not been reliably quantified.
